What is battery in Chicago?

Battery is knowingly making physical contact of an insulting, provoking, or harmful nature with another person, or causing them bodily harm. Under Illinois law (720 ILCS 5/12-3) simple battery is a misdemeanor; it becomes aggravated battery — a felony — when it causes great bodily harm, involves a weapon, or targets protected victims such as police officers, seniors, or transit workers.

Chicago PD splits battery reports into simple and aggravated IUCR codes, with descriptions noting domestic battery, use of a handgun or other weapon, and victim category. Battery is regularly the second-largest crime category in Chicago open data, and a large share of reports carry the domestic flag.
