What is robbery in Chicago?

Robbery is taking property directly from a person by force or by threatening the imminent use of force. Under Illinois law (720 ILCS 5/18-1) robbery is always a felony; armed robbery with a firearm adds mandatory enhancements, and vehicular hijacking (carjacking) is charged under its own statute. The use or threat of force against a victim is what separates robbery from theft.

Chicago PD descriptions distinguish armed robbery (handgun, knife, other weapon) from strong-arm robbery (no weapon), and flag aggravated cases. Street robberies and retail robberies are the most common subtypes in the open data.

LocalCrimeVault has 11,367 robbery reports indexed in Chicago — 2.7% of all tracked incidents. The most recent full month on record (June 2026) logged 346 reports, up from 75 in May 2026.
